Metaphysics is derived from the Greek words, meta, (meaning after, or beyond) and physiká, (meaning physics) and investigates the principles of reality transcending those of the physical world. Since metaphysics is concerned with the ultimate and non-physical nature of things, all religions that acknowledge the existence of God, or the human soul, are therefore metaphysical in nature. In the history of the Christian Religion the more esoteric metaphysical teachings were open only to an elite inner circle or sustained by secretive sects such as the Essenes or Gnostics. In the 1800s the metaphysical teachings of Christianity became more accessible to the public with the birth of accepted and recognized "New Thought" and "Christian Metaphysical" denominations.
New Thought Metaphysical Religions such as Unity, Religious Science, Science of Mind, and Divine Science trace their roots back to Phineas Parkhurst Quimby, (1802-1866), the earliest identifiable proponent of "New Thought Metaphysics." Christian Science is perhaps the most noted of the Christian Metaphysical religions. The Christian Science Monitor, a newspaper respected for it's unbiased reporting, is read the world over. Although "New Thought" and Christian Metaphysical Denominations are basically Christian in nature, because they were born of a Christian lineage and within a Christian society, they easily include practices, philosophies, teachings, and even some of the basic precepts of non-Christian religions such as Buddhism and Hinduism. In New Thought Metaphysical Religious Philosophy, the ability of a teaching to allow its adherents to experience the presence of God is much more important than who introduced the teaching and what part of the world it originated. A central teaching of New Thought Metaphysics is that thought evolves and unfolds, and In 1959 Dr. Paul Leon Masters conceived what has evolved into the International Metaphysical Ministry. The I.M.M. has since joined Unity and Religious Science as one of the major metaphysically oriented teachings categorized as New Thought Metaphysics. Dr. Masters also founded two universities, University of Metaphysics and University of Sedona, both teaching Advanced New Thought Metaphysics enabling their ministers and graduates with a firm and expanded educational foundation in the ministry field. |
