About the International Metaphysical Ministry (IMM)
About New Thought Metaphysics
In 1959, Dr. Paul Leon Masters began the Institute of Parapsychology in Beverly Hills, California which eventually evolved into the International Metaphysical Ministry. The IMM has joined Unity and Religious Science as one of the major metaphysically oriented movements that comes under the description of New Thought. The principle difference between the IMM and the other major New Thought denominations is that IMM ordained ministers are free to choose their own operating names. IMM ordained ministers can also choose what they teach and how they operate. The one provision is that the basic metaphysical teachings of the organization and its founder continue to be an integral part of what is shared with the public. As an option, should an enrollee feel more in tune with the Theocentric teachings of the founder, the student may opt to enroll in the Theocentric Psychology program of the Theocentric Life Society or transfer into it any time during or after another degree choice.
The New Thought Movement, or New Thought, is a spiritual movement which developed in the United States during the 1800’s and emphasizes metaphysical beliefs. It consists of a loosely allied group of religious denominations, authors, philosophers, and individuals who share a set of metaphysical beliefs.
The earliest identifiable proponent of New Thought was Phineas Parkhurst Quimby (1802–1866), an American philosopher, and healer. Quimby developed a belief system that included the tenet that a mind open to God’s wisdom could overcome any illness. During the late 1800’s the metaphysical healing practices of Quimby mingled with the “Mental Science” of Warren Felt Evans, a Swedenborgian minister.
William James, author of Varieties of Religious Experience, is regarded by many as the father of modern day psychology. He said:
“There are various sects of “New Thought,” but their agreements are so profound that their differences may be neglected…”
“In its gradual development during the last quarter of a century, it has taken up into itself a number of contributory elements, and it must now be reckoned with as a genuine religious power.”
“The leaders in this faith have had an intuitive belief in the all-saving power of healthy-minded attitudes… Their belief has in a general way been corroborated by the practical experience of their disciples; and this experience forms today, a mass imposing in amount.”
New Thought was propelled along by a number of spiritual thinkers and/or philosophers and emerged through a variety of religious denominations and churches, the most easily recognized today would probably be Unity Church and Religious Science.
By 1916, the International New Thought Alliance had encompassed many of the smaller groups around the world.
In general, modern day adherents of New Thought believe that their interpretation of “God” or “Infinite Intelligence” is “supreme, universal, and everlasting”; that divinity dwells within each person; that all people are spiritual beings; that “the highest spiritual principle is loving one another unconditionally; and that “our mental states are carried forward into manifestation and become our experience in daily living.
Adherents generally believe the following: As humankind gains greater understanding of the world, New Thought will evolve to assimilate new knowledge, with new insights being received by individuals continuously, over time.
The IMM was born of a spiritually independent minded man, Dr. Masters. The IMM and its University System of the University of Sedona and the University of Metaphysics are truly unique in the field of metaphysics, religion in general, and in New Thought.
About the International Metaphysical Ministry
Traditionally, the word Metaphysics comes to us from Ancient Greece, where it was a combination of two words-Meta, (meaning over and beyond) and physics. Thus, the combination means over and beyond physics. In the definition found in most dictionaries, Metaphysics is referred to as a branch of Philosophy that deals with First Cause and the Nature of Being. It is taught as a branch of Philosophy in most academic universities today under the label of “Speculative Philosophy.”
However, in today’s world, the word Metaphysics has become a description of many fields of interest. When one expresses an interest in Metaphysics, that interest may be in any one or a combination of the following subjects: Philosophy, Religion, Parapsychology, Mysticism, Yoga, ESP, Dreams, Jungian Psychology, Astrology, Meditation, Self-Help Studies, Positive Thinking, Life after Death, Reincarnation, etc.
The principle difference between the IMM and the other major New Thought, Holistic, Transpersonal, Transcendent, or New Thought denominations such as Unity or Religious Science is that IMM ordained ministers are free to choose their own operating names. IMM ordained ministers can also choose what they teach and how they operate.
The common denominator of these and all similar subjects deals with an exploration and application of Higher-Self Reality. In the idealistic sense, the question becomes how does such knowledge benefit human life on this earth, both individually and collectively?
If we were to travel from one metaphysical teacher or organization to another, we would find people engaging in different things; all under the label of Metaphysics. This could be a wide range: yogis, mystics, astrologers, positive thinking teachers, meditation teachers, grapho-analysts, spiritual healers, self-help teachers, etc. However, the basic denominator is the search for truth, purpose and meaning in life, which cannot be isolated from basic spiritual questions. All of these fields, therefore, are regarded as part of Metaphysics by the International Metaphysical Ministry.
It is not the position of the International Metaphysical Ministry, to take one phase of the study of Metaphysics over another. It is the belief of the IMM that there are many paths humans may travel on the way to finding Truth. There is an old proverb which states “No matter what path a human may travel, it is My Path; no matter where he walks, it leads to Me (God).”

Become a New Thought, Transcendent, Transpersonal, Mystical, Holistic Oriented Minister
The IMM is an association of New Thought Metaphysical Ministers. Although most of the member ministers have achieved a religious doctoral degree in an aspect of the IMM, a minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an IMM University is required for ministerial membership recognition.
The IMM is a worldwide organization with over 6,000 active ministries in over 120 countries. The countries are shaded purple on the world map above.
The IMM Ministers subscribe to a set of basic tenets. Aside from these tenets, IMM Ministers are free to teach their individual and unique understandings in their own style. You can explore some of our basic tenets using the links on the left.

Our Mission Statement begins as follows: “To offer spirituality to a world in need of Higher Spiritual Truth beyond that which is found in conventional, traditional, fundamentalist, and/or dogmatic religions.” Please be sure to read our complete Mission Statement.
The IMM oversees two private, post-secondary, non-secular, religious New Thought Universities. The Universities specialize in self-paced Home Study/Distance Learning programs. Programs range from the minister’s/bachelor’s degree study through the doctoral degree program. The IMM provides quality controls over the University’s educational programs. This guarantees that all IMM Ministers and Graduates have received the same solid foundation and have achieved a personal understanding of Metaphysical knowledge commensurate to their degree courses.
The IMM has set a tradition in its organization that grants the maximum independence allowed by law to its ministers, graduates and members. This allows them the freedom to minister and teach according to their individual and unique insights, understandings, and talents. The one provision is that the rudimentary metaphysical teachings of the organization and its founder continue to be an integral part of what is shared with the public. As an option, should an enrollee feel more in tune with the Theocentric teachings of the founder, the student may opt to enroll in the Theocentric Psychology program of the Theocentric Life Society or transfer into it any time during or after another degree choice.
The IMM never requires that the name or initials of the IMM organization, the IMM logo, or notice of IMM affiliation be included in the name of its member’s personal endeavors and/or ministries. This may hinder the IMM from achieving public notoriety and name recognition as the major Metaphysical Denomination – which it is. The IMM exists to support our members in their accomplishments – not take credit for them.
Many realize a call to ministry and/or teaching after already beginning a different career. So the IMM has made all programs self-paced. The minister’s/bachelor’s degree program may be completed in about 6 months. Master’s degrees can be earned in an average of 2-3 years, though highly motivated people have earned their degree in as little as one year – all while maintaining their present career.

Many Are Called…
As William James, the foremost authority on and author of, Varieties of Religious Experience said, “There are various sects of “New Thought” but their agreements are so profound that their differences may be neglected…”
Many modern day spiritual/metaphysical teachers are actually teaching New Thought Metaphysics and are not aware of it. They have no idea of the history and the far reaching aspects of “New Thought”. This almost universal, agreement of basic teachings can be seen as a confirmation of the validity of the truths of what is becoming so strongly and widely imbedded in the mass consciousness.
It must be noted that acceptance into the program does not guarantee ordination nor the receiving of a degree. These must be earned by successfully completing the study and exam requirements. Both of the IMM universities allow the re-taking of exams and resubmission of Thesis and Dissertation, if needed, until such a time as the student can prove an adequate understanding of the study material.
International Metaphysical Ministry University System (IMM)
University of Metaphysics and the University of Sedona
The University of Metaphysics and the University of Sedona are private, post-secondary, distance learning, theological schools operating under the auspices of the International Metaphysical Ministry. The IMM is a non-profit, religious exempt organization as designated by the Internal Revenue Service of the United States. The curriculum of both Universities is strictly non-secular and theological in nature – in the Holistic New Thought Transcendent branch of Metaphysical Theology.
Both the University of Metaphysics and the University of Sedona have a history, as teaching institutions, of over five and a half decades. This history can be traced to various educational and research facilities. Today, each university stands alone as an independent entity. Under the guidance and leadership of Dr. Paul Leon Masters, the University of Metaphysics applied for and was granted the legal right to award non-secular degrees up to Doctoral or Ph.D. level in 1976. In 2003, the University of Sedona began operating under the same legal right in the state of Arizona.
Each university has its own unique accelerated doctoral degree program. In addition, the University of Metaphysics provides an accelerated undergraduate studies program that services both schools. Thus, students enrolling in a doctoral program with the University of Sedona will receive their bachelor’s degree, practitioner’s diploma, ministerial diploma, ministerial ordination, and master’s degree through the University of Metaphysics. Their doctoral degree could be awarded by either the University of Metaphysics or the University of Sedona according to the degree specialty subject that is chosen.
Since both universities are totally focused on a Holistic, New Thought, Transcendent, Theological, Theocentric, Mystical curriculum, they each legally exist beyond the scope of the United States Higher Education Act of 1965. As there is no official agency governing metaphysical education in the US, the IMM voluntarily maintains extensive oversight, quality control, and critical evaluation of the universities’ activities and curriculum. The IMM ensures that both universities’ academic standards are at least equal to that of most secular post-secondary educational institutions within the US. This standard is ensured through exam and thesis/dissertation review.
Starting in 1959 as the Institute of Parapsychology, what is now the IMM has evolved over fifty-five years of service and experience in the private, post-secondary religious field. The IMM has students and graduates in the United States along with 120 other countries internationally. There are over 6,000 active ministries under the IMM. This is no small task as the IMM respects the individuality and independence of its graduates, ministers, and teachers. The IMM places no restrictions in the naming of a graduate’s endeavors. Ministers and teachers are granted great latitude in how they teach, and even the nature of their teachings. The IMM encourages independent research, points of view, and the use of individual talents and modalities. The only requirement is that its ministers and teachers stay true to the basic precepts of their education and the founder.
The IMM believes its name and any designs or marks of the University of Metaphysics and the University of Sedona have achieved a distinct and unique placement in the world’s informational and commercial media. The IMM has and will continue to protect these rights.
It is the goal of the IMM University System to ensure that our graduates will always be able to take pride in their alma mater and be able to say with integrity and confidence, “I received my doctoral degree from the most prominent, well respected Metaphysical University in the world.”
With warmth and love, we welcome you into our worldwide International Metaphysical Ministry family.
